About

Real-world smart home fixes, explained simply by an engineer.

Ryan Holland - This Smart House

I’m Ryan Holland โ€” an electrical engineer based in Kansas City. I test smart home tech in my own home, with my own automations, on my own network. No studio demos. No borrowed setups. Everything you see on this channel is running in a real house.

I started This Smart House because I couldn’t find the kind of smart home content I actually wanted to watch โ€” practical, specific, and honest about what works and what doesn’t. Most reviews tell you a product is “great” or “terrible.” I’d rather tell you exactly what problem it solves, what it doesn’t, and whether the tradeoffs are worth it for your setup.

My background is in electrical engineering and IT, which shapes how I evaluate everything. I don’t just unbox a camera and point it at my driveway โ€” I test night vision in real conditions, measure detection zones, and compare AI processing across firmware updates. When I review a robot vacuum, I run it on my actual floors with my actual furniture and my actual pet hair situation.

What I Cover

Security cameras, robot vacuums, smart locks, lighting, Home Assistant automations, Matter/Thread interoperability, and DIY projects. I also get into adjacent categories when they intersect with the smart home โ€” energy monitoring, networking, and occasionally things like e-bikes and EDC gear.

My home runs on Home Assistant with an AI agent (Alfred) connected through a custom MCP server. That setup is both the testing ground and the subject of a lot of my content. When I show an automation, it’s one I actually use every day.

How I Approach Content

๐Ÿ”ง Problem โ†’ Fix โ†’ Outcome

Every video starts with a real problem and ends with a measurable result. No filler, no fluff.

โš–๏ธ Honest Tradeoffs

I lead with caveats. If a product has a limitation, you’ll hear about it before the recommendation.

๐Ÿก Practical Over Theoretical

Specs are meaningless without context. I explain what numbers mean in actual daily use.

๐Ÿ“ Conservative Recommendations

I only recommend upgrades when there’s a clear, practical benefit โ€” not because something is new.

Transparency

Some products on this channel are provided by brands for review. Some videos include affiliate links. I disclose both, every time. My editorial approach doesn’t change based on how I got the product โ€” if something doesn’t work well, I’ll say so regardless. Work With This Smart House

Interested in partnering on a review, integration guide, or sponsored content? I share full scripts with brands before filming and maintain editorial control on every video. If that sounds like a fit, I’m selective but always open to working with brands that make genuinely useful products.
